General Miso Questions
Play using a Real Instrument
-
The notes aren’t reading properly!
If the audio detection isn’t working properly, there are 3 things you should check first:
Is your instrument in tune?
Is the sensitivity set too low, or too high?
Are your strings very old, or very new?
1. IS YOUR INSTRUMENT IN TUNE?
The app cannot detect the proper note if your instrument doesn’t produce the proper tone. Strings can become out of tune within a few songs, or if the instrument has not been used in a while. Use the built-in tuner to tune your instrument, then try again!2. IS THE SENSITIVITY SET TOO LOW OR TOO HIGH?
Audio detection is not an exact science. Each instrument and environment is uniquely different, and so while we have attempted to optimize the app, it may need a little tweaking to get it working perfectly for your own instruments. Experiment with the sensitivity slider—which controls the audio detections sensitivity—until you reach the optimal setting. If you have to play a correct note several times in order to get the app to read it; adjust the sensitivity up. If the app is “skipping” over notes you haven’t played yet; adjust the sensitivity down.
3. ARE YOUR STRINGS VERY OLD OR VERY NEW?
If your string are very new, you may need to break them in a bit before they can be used effectively with the app. Old strings will simply produce a lesser quality of sound, meaning that the app will perform incorrectly with a greater frequency; so get you some new strings!! -
Do I have to use an adapter to play with Miso Music?
No, you don’t have to. Miso Music: Plectrum will pick up the sounds of your instrument using its own internal microphone. However using an instrument adapter does increase the accuracy of our pitch detection by decreasing false positives created by noisy environments.
Miso Music: Plectrum is compatible with 1/4″ to 3.5mm adapters. And while we have tested our app with various models of adapters, including the iRig; the majority of our testing has occurred with the Woodees Instrument Adapter.
To use the app with a adaptor such as Woodees Instrument Adapter, simply plug one end into your device; and the other into your instrument. If you would like to use the adaptor with headphones, or speaker plug in the adapter FIRST, then go to your Advanced Setting screen to enable use with a device. This will prevent feedback as your device switches sound output sources.

I don’t have my own instrument! Can I still play with Miso Music?
Yes! You you can use our virtual instruments, and play directly on your iPad®. This is also a great way to utilize our app in situations where you can’t bring your guitar. Learn music on an airplane or even on a bus!
We’ve built in one of each of the types of instruments we support: guitar, ‘ukulele, bass, banjo, tenor banjo, and mandolin. Plus we have additional models for purchase in the Instrument section of the store.
-
I’m trying to play the app, but there’s no sound coming out!

scroll the pickers up or down to change the tuning.You can set it back to default by pressing ‘Standard Tuning’
-
Where are the rest of the frets on my instrument?
Due to the length of mobile devices, we can’t show all the frets at once.
You can press the up or down arrow to scroll on virtual fretboards. -
Virtual instrument is not detecting my fingers.
If the virtual fretboard can’t detect your fingers, you may want to disable Multitasking Gestures while using Miso Music.
To disable it:
1) Quit Miso Music
2) Go to Settings from your device home screen
3) Go to General
4) Scroll down to Multitasking Gestures and switch it to OFF*If you are using iOS5, unfortunately you can’t disable the Notification Center at once with Apple. However, you can turn off individual app notification in your device’s Settings.

How do I play the virtual instrument?
Holding an iPad:
1) the long side of iPad should be resting on the palm of your fretting hand (the hand that holds down the strings on the neck of an instrument)
2) your thumb is behind the iPad while the other four fingers move freely on the glass side
3) your strumming hand is placed above the strum zone, you may use it to support the iPad as well
4) your iPad should be held at chest level, facing away from your bodyHolding an iPhone/iPod touch:
1) similar to holding the neck of a real instrument, wrap your hand around the long side of your device with the thumb on one edge and the four fingers on the screen
2) make sure the weight is rest on your thumb so your fingers can move freely on the screen
3) your strumming hand is placed above the strum zone
4) your device should be held at chest level, facing away from your body
As the notes scroll down, play the note when they reach the tempo bar (blinking yellow strip). If you don’t know which finger you should use to hold down the string, you can turn on Fingering guide in Advanced Settings.The small number on each note tells you which finger you should use:
0 = don’t hold down anything
1 = index finger
2 = middle finger
3 = ring finger
4 = pinky
Strobe Tuner
-
What do Pitch and Range mean?
Miso Strobe Tuner allows you to change the reference pitch (A4) and pitch range. Reference pitch varies from place to place, 440Hz is the standard pitch for the US. Beginners should not change this setting. Range will affect how the strobe tuner functions. If the pattern is moving too fast, set to a lower range by pressing the left arrow. -
Tuning in Simple Mode
To tune your instrument using Simple Mode, simply play a note on your instrument into the built-in microphone. The closest note to what you are playing will appear as a letter in the left box. However, the note is not in tune until the line of color boxes shows the green, or center box lit up.The strobe square helps you see and understand that each note is made up of multiple harmonics.
The pattern on the strobe tuner will move left or right if it is not in tune;<--- left means the note is flat.
—> right means the note is sharp.When one of the strips within the strobe tuner is perfectly still, this also means that your string is in tune.
-
Tuning in Advanced Mode
Advanced Mode is the most complex and precise of all our tuners. Advanced mode allows you to see multiple notes at once, and the multiple harmonics of each note. Our Advanced Tuner is polyphonic pitch detection at it’s finest! Play a note on your instrument into the built-in microphone, and look for the pattern in the specific note, or harmonic that you wish to tune. The pattern will move left or right if it is not in tune:
<--- left means the note is flat.
---> right means the note is sharp.When the pattern is perfectly still the note, or harmonic is perfectly in tune. If you are having difficulties getting a note to stay still this may indicate that you need to change our your old strings.
